Even though it was a small request from my friends, I got quite interested in the name of the business. So I ended up spending around 20 hours working on the logo and banner for this website (original look).
I started by writing down important notes about overall feelings, preferred colors and message of the logo and banner. After that, I gathered some images related to the field of rice business for reference. In any design project, it is always important that client side know exactly what they want (while they don't have the expertise to visualize and create, it does not mean designing team have to do all those "shooting in the dark"). Either they have made some researching, or the designer would have to. Anyhow, I found 3 logos that looks pretty nice to show my friends and ask them which one they like best.
First image was the answer. I went on and made some vector drafts of logo. The ones below are a few selections I chose to resemble the evolution process of designing logo. Other variations were sketched out with pencils and papers. In the end, it seems the 3rd one was the best arrangement. It resembles a fish growing into dragon in Asian culture. The 3 rice branches also resemble 3 regions: The Northern, Middle and Southern... of Vietnam.
Final touch was to edit the color balance. Red and blue were nice ones. But to closely resemble meaning of the name, light blue violet was the best choice. "Ngoc Ly", in Vietnamese, means both a kind of gemstone and flower with violet color.
When the logo is finished, designing banners turned out to be easier. I used some brushes in Photoshop to create the "wow" effect, put in some images of family having dinner together... and voilà! We have the banners for one of the most web2.0 rice business websites out there.
